“Ramona” is a heart-wrenching love story between two… locomotives. In the post-war Soviet Union, the locomotive engineer Aron is sent to work in Siberia, while his wife Ramona waits for him at the small train station Rioni.
The play is based on a sentence said by Rudyard Kipling: “Next to the marine engine, the locomotive is the most sensitive object that man has ever created.” Gabriadze incorporates another motif into the story – a traveling circus – a symbol of childhood and happiness: “The locomotive and the traveling circus are things that have disappeared from the world. I felt the need to tell about the feeling of paradise that once surrounded me, without me deserving of it, and from which I was exiled by life,” says the director.
“The genius of Gabriadze, the founder of the National Theater Studio of Tbilisi, is in casting epic events into miniature scenes of a puppet theater – some of which are playful and extremely amusing.” (American Theater)
