Porgy and Bess, the American opera in the making, which swept Broadway and the largest and most important opera houses in the world, comes to Israel straight from New York with the participation of 48 actors, singers and a choir, accompanied by 50 musicians from the New York Harlem Theatre Orchestra.
The opera, which first premiered on Broadway in 1935, was written by Du Bois, Dorothy Hayward, and Ira Gershwin and composed by George Gershwin. “Porgy and Bess” depicts African-American life in the United States and focuses on the love story of the disabled Porgy and the drug-addicted Bess. The opera is filled with countless familiar melodies that you didn’t know came from it, many melodies that became the alphabet of American music in the 20th century.
Under the artistic and musical direction of William Berkheimer, the New York Harlem Theater, which has performed in renowned halls and opera houses throughout Europe and the United States, is bringing an unforgettable experience.
