Israel has the world’s first klezmer musical. “The Wedding Dance” was conceived and created by Hungarian composer, Franz Jábory Pegya Kossuth, winner of the Hungarian Composer’s Award, the man who most represents klezmer music in Hungary and the founder of the Budapest Klezmer Ensemble. The play was co-written by Istvan Kalay and Gyorgy Böm, and the lyrics were written by Tibor Mikulós to music by Jábory.

Over a hundred participants and the orchestra of the Budapest State Operetta and Musical Theater will present the extraordinary and exciting musical for the first time in Israel.

The soloists, singers, dancers and musicians will be joined by Franz Ybori’s original Klezmer Orchestra, Pegia Kossuth.

The plot is set in a small Romanian-Hungarian-Jewish village in Transylvania. Andreas Berni, the son of a wealthy farmer, is celebrating his bachelor party before his wedding to the poor but beautiful Rosie Petkus. However, it turns out that the orphan Rosie does not have all the necessary documents for the marriage ceremony. At the suggestion of the old Mrs. Micik, Cosma, a local notary, goes to the orphanage in Koloshvar for more information. Here it turns out that Rosie is not the daughter of the Petkus, but was adopted by them. Her real father is the late mill owner Salmon Blum and her mother is Regina Weiss, who was seduced by the same Blum and died shortly after giving birth. In short, Rosie, who until now was considered a Christian, is actually a Jew!

Outcast by her former friends, a depressed Rosie is invited to live with her philosophical Uncle Hershkowitz. There she finds a new home and begins to learn her new faith.
